The Origins of Basketball
Basketball was invented in December 1891 by Dr. James Naismith, a physical education instructor who needed an indoor sport to keep his students active during the winter. He wrote 13 basic rules and used a soccer ball and two peach baskets as goals.
Growth of the Game
Over time, basketball spread across colleges and communities. Professional leagues formed, merged, and eventually led to the creation of the National Basketball Association (NBA), which became the premier professional basketball league in the world.
Modern Basketball
Today, basketball is played globally at every level—from playground courts to international arenas. The game continues to evolve with new strategies, rule changes, and a growing emphasis on three‑point shooting and pace.
